Scope of Competition

For this competition, CAPA is using the definition of Monochrome as defined by the Fédération Internationale de l’Art Photographique’s (FIAP) and is as follows:

A black and white work fitting from the very dark grey (black) to the very clear grey (white) is a monochrome work with the various shades of grey. A black and white work toned entirely in a single colour will remain a monochrome work able to stand in the black and white category. On the other hand a black and white work modified by a partial toning or by the addition of one colour becomes a colour work (polychrome) to stand in the colour category.

CAPA has provided further clarification on the FIAP monochrome definition with the following:

A monochromatic color scheme uses the grayscale as the primary hue (colour) with a range of black shades (darker) and tints (lighter) of the grayscale.  

 A ‘duo-toned’ image is not considered a monochromatic colour scheme because it consists of two or more hues which are not consistent with the primary hue.

For the purposes of balancing out the judging for this competition, you are asked to submit your image into one of the following themes:

  1. Person(s) – image(s) can be traditional or casual portraits, and could incorporate the environment and/or workspaces of the individual(s).
  2. Architecture – image(s) should be of a human-made construction (mobile, free-standing, or outdoor). Image can be taken from inside or outside the structure.  This theme includes both rural and urban settings.
  1. Still Life – image(s) is a work of art depicting mostly inanimate subject matter, typically commonplace objects which may be either natural (food, flowers, plants, rocks, or shells) or man-made (drinking glasses, books, vases, jewelry, coins, pipes, and so on) in an artificial setting.
  1. Landscape– image(s) of subjects such as weather phenomena, geological formations, landscapes, seascapes and natural phenomena, planets, stars and astronomical events.
  1. Nature/Wildlife – image(s) of subjects such as amphibians, insects, marine-life, reptiles, wild or domesticated animals or birds, etc. This category also includes botanical, insect, subjects. Domesticated animals and birds are permitted in this theme.

‘Hand-of-man’ is permitted in all images submitted into this competition.
