Scope of Competition

Photojournalism reflects a ‘newsworthy’ image in order to “tell a story”.

For the purposes of this competition, “newsworthy” is defined

  • Timeliness – recently occurred event or incident
  • Proximity – local, national or international topic of interest
  • Conflict and Controversy – situations where people argue or disagree or protest about actions, events, ideas or policies
  • Human Interest – people are interested in other people
  • Relevance – image which would attract interest to assist individuals to form a decision or confirm their current perspective

Each image submitted into this competition should endeavour to answer who, what, where and when.  Title of the image will introduce the image to the judges.

Image should not be staged, posed or re-acting an event.

Photojournalism is not meant to be pretty, structured or artistic.

In capturing images for this competition, all photographers must endeavour to comply with a photojournalist principle:

Treat all subjects with respect and dignity. Give special consideration to vulnerable subjects and compassion to victims of crime or tragedy. Intrude on private moments of grief only when the public has an overriding and justifiable need to see.”

CAUTION – If capturing a ‘newsworthy’ story (eg. accident or fire scene), one must follow any direction from a local official (e.g. police or fire).  Your safety is paramount.

Important Note – For this competition, the entrant must preserve the submitted image’s original un-retouched (not cropped, or edited) JPEG or camera RAW file. Original file must be easily accessible prior to submitting an image into this competition.  All editing to an image must be undertaken by using a copy of the original image.

Definition:

When uploading an image into this competition, it must be assigned to one of the following themes:

Contemporary Issue – that is currently affecting people or places and may not be unresolved.  For examples – natural disaster; situations which impacts individuals; parade, protest, community conflict, gender inequality, etc…

Environmental Issue – are problems with the planet’s air, water, soil, etc…  For example – examples – global warming, acid rain, air pollution, urban sprawl, waste disposal, water pollution, climate change, etc…

Animal/Bird/Insect/Marine – in a ‘comical situation or pose’ involving animal, bird, marine subject or insect.  Domesticated animal and birds are permitted in this theme.

Portrait – candid images of individual(s) whose situation is ‘newsworthy.’

Sports – any candid image involving a sports activities which is deemed ‘newsworthy.’
